Sex Worker Mutual Aid Fund

Help Us Fill The Pot

SWAN is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of our Sex Worker Mutual Aid Fund, set to debut this September! In the spirit of solidarity, this project will provide financial support and relief to Sex Workers in Waterloo Region.

What is a Mutual Aid Fund?

A Mutual Aid Fund (MAF) is more than just a pot of money; it’s a resource and a lifeline extended by community members to community members when they need it most. Unlike traditional charity models, Mutual Aid Funds operate on the principles of collaborative resource redistribution among neighbours and communities. It’s about lifting each other and standing together in times of hardship.

Why do local Sex Workers need a MAF?

Sex Work is work, yet it often comes without the safety nets that many take for granted. Sex Workers don’t have access to sick days or paid leave, leaving us vulnerable in times of crisis. The overwhelming housing and cost of living crises are disproportionately affecting Sex Workers in Waterloo Region. These conditions create desperate financial situations for many of us, hugely increasing our risk of being forced into increasingly dangerous working conditions.

In Waterloo Region, an oversaturated market and dwindling client affordability compound to create even more dangerous circumstances. These factors underscore the urgent need for a safety net that supports our Sex Worker community and safeguards their well-being.

How will the MAF work?

SWAN is working to establish a process for local Sex Workers to access this Mutual Aid Fund. Sex workers will be able to apply directly through our website, where SWAN organizers will verify them. Once verified, all financial requests will be granted based on the available funds, with each applicant receiving personalized resource and system navigation support from SWAN members.

How can the community help?

Our Mutual Aid Fund’s success hinges on our community’s generosity and support. We must fill the pot to share its blessings with those who need it most. Whether through fundraising efforts, donations, or spreading the word, every contribution makes a meaningful impact. Join us as we embark on this journey of solidarity and support. Together, we can create a safer, more resilient community for all.
